How to solve a sliding puzzle
Sliding puzzles look like they reward fast fingers. They don't. Every one of them — the numbered 15 puzzle you remember from a plastic toy, and the block puzzles where a car or a coloured piece has to escape a crowded board — is solved the same way: you work backwards from the piece that has to move last. This guide gives you that method for both families of puzzle, plus the mistakes that keep people stuck for twenty minutes on a board they could clear in eight moves.
The two kinds of sliding puzzle
In a tile puzzle (the 15 puzzle, or any 3×3 photo scramble) every tile is the same size and there is one empty square. Tiles can eventually reach any position, so the puzzle is about order. In a sliding block puzzle the pieces have different lengths and each one only moves along its own axis — horizontal pieces left and right, vertical pieces up and down. Pieces can never rotate, so a piece may be locked into one row for the entire level. The puzzle is about space, not order. Knowing which type you are looking at tells you which method below to use.
Method 1 — the layer method for the 15 puzzle
Do not try to fix the whole board at once. Solve the top row first, left to right, and once it is correct never move those tiles again — route the empty square around them through the rows below. Then solve the second row the same way. When only the bottom two rows are left, stop solving row by row: place the last two rows as pairs of columns, sliding two tiles into position together. Almost everyone who gets stuck on a 15 puzzle is stuck because they keep breaking a finished row to rescue a later tile.
Method 2 — the blocker method for sliding block puzzles
This is the one that matters for games like Escape Grid, Rush Hour and Unblock Me. Ask four questions in order: which piece has to leave? What straight lane does it need? Which single piece is nearest the exit in that lane? Where can that piece legally go? The fourth question is the whole puzzle. Very often the answer is "nowhere yet", which means you have found a smaller puzzle to solve first, and that is progress rather than a dead end. Keep asking until you reach a move you can make right now — then play the chain from the beginning.
Why the correct first move often looks wrong
In a well-designed block puzzle the first move usually pushes a piece away from the exit, or moves a piece you have no interest in. That is deliberate. Designers build levels so that the greedy move — shoving the goal piece toward its exit immediately — fills the one cell you needed later. If a level has resisted you for a while, reset it and deliberately start with the move you rejected as pointless.
Five mistakes that keep people stuck
First, moving one cell at a time instead of deciding where a piece finally belongs. Second, refusing to move long pieces, which are usually the real obstruction. Third, ignoring the edges — the outer rows and columns are the only parking space most boards have. Fourth, trying moves at random and losing track of the position; resetting is faster than untangling. Fifth, using a hint on the first look. A hint spent before you have found the blocker teaches you nothing, and you learn the pattern that unlocks the next twenty levels by finding it yourself.
Is the puzzle even solvable?
For a randomly scrambled 15 puzzle, roughly half of all arrangements are mathematically impossible — no amount of skill will finish them. That is worth knowing before you blame yourself for a physical toy. Hand-designed block puzzles are different: in Escape Grid every level is checked by a solver before release, and the game stores the shortest possible solution for each one, which is how it awards stars for finishing near that number. If a level looks impossible, it is solvable — you simply haven't found the order yet.
